This
existing Episcopal church, located in a converted stable on a
wooded suburban site, needed to double its Worship, Education,
and Activity space. The new construction was to retain the natural
beauty of the site and views from the church into the surrounding
woods. The addition, especially the Nave, was to have the simplicity,
dignity, and direct construction of a barn, and retain a sense
of its relationship to the Nativity. The Church was to express
spiritual values of community, of quiet meditation, and of space
at the center. It was to be a place for tradition and enthusiasm,
for liturgical liveliness and creativity. The copper covered stone
Font is prominently placed at the entrance diagonally opposite
the Altar. Light filters in from high clerestory windows through
the soaring central space formed by barn like wood trusses. Materials
and colors are natural and neutral without being rustic, and emphasize
colorful liturgical hangings. Light and color change with the
liturgical and natural seasons and the time of day.
Features:
Barn
like wood trusses in the Nave.
- High clerestory windows in the Nave where
light filters in.
- New spacious and well lit classrooms.
