In November of 2000 Lincoln Hills Development Corporation awarded Brandt Construction, Inc. the contract to begin restoring and refurbishing the old historic Cannelton Cotton Mill. This project consisted of renovating the 150-year old, four-story historic Cannelton Cotton Mill turning the structure into 70 low-income housing units. Bringing to life this historic landmark meant building a completely new building inside to meet the needs of today, while the outside was restored to look like the original historic Cotton Mill. The building’s 100 ft. twin towers were completely renovated on the outside including the restoration of the original windows and louvers. There were difficulties encountered during the construction, as is typical with massive restoration projects. Through the perseverance of our staff, and the cooperation and assistance of the owner and the architect, the obstacles were all overcome. The result is a building we can all be proud of for years, if not generations, to come.

Features:

  • Over 280 window openings were prepared to receive new windows.
  • BCI’s superintendent devised a standard wood subframe for the window openings that anchored into the existing to assist with window ordering.
  • BCI craftsmen restored the existing wood windows, louvers, and doors for the towers.
  • Antique tools were used to re-face the replacement sandstone.
  • Four-story building with (11) efficiency, (17) 1-bedroom, (28) 2-bedroom, and (14) 3-bedroom apartments.
  • One 100’ tower displays the original staircase to the highest level encased for all to observe.
  • One 100’ tower houses a mailroom on the 1st floor, and laundry areas on the remaining three levels.
  • Exterior load bearing walls and veneer are made up of native Indiana sandstone
