In the fall of 1995, Brandt Construction, Inc. was called by Christ Church Cathedral to begin their fifth project together. The landmark church on the circle needed an elevator. After 3 years of discussions, planning, reviewing and costing out different possibilities, construction documents were completed and construction began in June of 1999. Construction involved a phased project which included office, nursery, classroom, library and conference room relocations. Church activities and worship services were to be maintained during construction. Unique components of the construction included demolition and excavation of the fellowship hall concrete stage and flooring for the elevator pit. Foundation underpinning and new steel beams and columns were added for structural support. All materials were removed and provided by way of a 3’ X 7’ door to the back alley. The basement demolition resembled a mining operation with push carts and electric hoist to the street level where materials were loaded into dumpsters. Existing building structural modifications were made at each floor to accommodate the elevator hoist and new stairs. Primary mechanical and electrical systems were relocated to facilitate new construction. Finally new high level finishes were installed throughout the church including oak doors, trim and cabinetry.

Features:

  • Demolition and excavation of concrete stage and flooring for elevator pit.
  • Foundation underpinning and new steel beams and columns.
  • Basement demolition done by way of “mining operation" with push cars and electric hoist.
  • Office, nursery, classroom, library and conference room relocations.
  • Building of Nativity and annual tear down and erection of Nativity.
