The
original structure for this local landmark was built in 1876,
with a small addition being added in 1881. A final, larger addition
was added in 1938. Brandt Construction, Inc.’s scope of
work included an entire gut and remodel of this historic structure.
Since historic tax credits were involved in the funding, all the
restoration work had to be approved by the Secretary of the Interior
Standards. Great care was given to the preservation of original
materials, as well as the replication of missing elements. The
final product was 33 subsidized income apartments.
Features:
The
original globe and telescope atop the two bell towers are well
known local landmarks.
- The original school bell was relocated and placed on permanent
display in the main lobby.
- Most of the existing windows and existing doors were restored
by Brandt Construction, Inc.’s craftsmen and reused in
the project.
- The movie, “Hoosiers”, was filmed in the school
building’s adjacent gymnasium.
- The existing grand staircase was restored and missing parts
replicated by Brandt Construction, Inc.’s craftsmen.
- Even the original cast iron fence surrounding the exterior
was restored for posterity.
