After
the selection of the winning design for these memorials, Brandt
Construction, Inc. was awarded this contract in October 1995,
and began construction in November 1995. Each monument, standing
a grand 25 feet tall, is a portion of a 12’6” diameter
cylinder. The convex public sides face toward their respective
streets, topped with the name of each war and engraved with historical
text; the concave private sides face each other, listing the names
of those who died in the wars. The winning designer, Patrick Brunner,
created these as such that the Vietnam Memorial is 7/12th of a
circle, and the Korean Memorial is the remaining 5/12th. The size
of each is significant in that the Vietnam war lasted longer than
the Korean war, and more lives were lost in Vietnam than in Korea.
Over 3,000 were in attendance of the unveiling, including war
veterans.
Features:
Since
the memorials are for the people, their designs were acquired
through a design competition. The winner was Patrick Brunner,
a local architect.
- Two free standing monuments on War Memorial Plaza. Each monument
consists of a radial 25’ reinforced concrete structure
supporting Indiana Limestone and Sierra White Granite Façade
into which the historical text and names of those who died in
the wars is engraved.
- Construction was completed May 1, 1996, twenty-four days prior
to the dedication ceremony.
- All limestone and granite panels were fabricated on a radius
with only a 1/4” joint in between.
